Drumset/Percussion Instruction

Genres: Big Band/Swing, Blues, Funk, Jazz, Latin, Metal, Modern "Alternative", Oldies: 50s-70s, Punk/Hardcore, R&B, Rap, Reggae, Rock/Pop General, Ska

I started playing drumset at the age of 11 after 2 years of piano lessons did not convince me otherwise

I first played in a friend's bands in 5th grade, started in the school band in 6th grade, and continued into Marching band, Symphonic Band, and Jazz band through high school, and then college Symphonic and Jazz band.

My teaching style comes in equal parts from what I have learned as a self-taught player and what I have learned from his formal music education. Technique, rudiments, and music reading will all be part of the lesson as much as improvisation, "jamming", and most importantly, having fun.

Instruments taught include drumset, rudimental (marching band) and symphonic (concert band) snare, conga, timbales, auxiliary percussion (cowbell, clave, woodblock), and melodic percussion (marimba, bells, etc...)

High School & College

I was awarded auxiliary percussion chair ('93), and drum chair ('94) with the Oklahoma State Jazz Ensemble

As part of the Union High School Renegade Regiment (Marching Band), I  won 3 state championships and have been ranked in the top 15 marching bands nationally ('94, '95), and as part of the Renegade Regiment Drumline placed 3rd nationally ('94)

As part of Union High School percussion ensemble, I won the international call for tapes for the Percussive Arts Society International Convention for high school percussion ensembles and appeared on the cover of Percussive Notes magazine

I have played in several bands outside of school with friends, putting into practice what I learned from school bands (phrasing, call-and-response) and adding to it non-solo improvisation or "jamming" and how to play with musicians of varying styles and skill levels

I studied Music Education for my first two years of college

In my first year with the Coe College Jazz Band ('97) I was awarded the drum chair with the Iowa All-Star Jazz Band.

I attended private clinics with legends like Ed Shaughnessy and shared the stage with jazz greats like Ignacio Berroa.

I found funding, led auditions, and wrote music for the first Coe College Marching Drumline, played and recorded with the jazz quartet "The Jamie Thompson 5" (clever, huh?), and finally graduated in 2000 with a double major B.A. in Music and Religion.

After graduation, I taught group student and adult lessons at Rico Music in Chicago for 2 years, while performing in and around Chicago and recording with the blues/rock band Squai.

I eventually moved to Madison in 2003 and began performing with the R&B/Stax soul group "Arkansas Mel & The Good Dogs" although now I am busy playing and recording with "Aaron Williams & The Hoodoo".

Aaron Williams & The Hoodoo has been voted Isthmus magazine's favorite new band and favorite blues band 3 years in a row.

We have been featured on Madison's Urban Theater, WGN, CNN, and local morning shows in Green Bay and Minneapolis, awarded 5 Madison Area Music Association awards (aka the MAMA's), (Awards received for the band were Blues Song, Blues Album, Blues Band of the year, and Artist of the Year, the first blues band to win the title)

In 2010, Eric was awarded the MAMA award for drummer of the year as well.
